Mara
On this grey day I feel another success story would be great💜 This one was a foster fail 🙃 my gorgeous dog Mara Moo🐾. I’ve now had Mara for over 4 years, when I first got her she was completely malnourished, didn’t understand the concept of going on walks, matted beyond belief and some hair loss on her belly.

I wanted to help rescues the best way I could and put my name down for becoming a foster person for abandoned and abused dogs in Bosnia. Eventually I was set up with Mara, saved from a kill shelter notorious for leaving dogs to starve to death so I agreed to meet the transportation in September of 2019 at Scotch Corner.

Away I went with help to go and pick her up, you could see the fear in her eyes, the lack of trust and the complete betrayal of life, I felt she had been bred from also at some point due to larger teats.

Over the course of 2 months I groomed her constantly, getting the matts out, I worked on getting her some weight on, I’d have to pick her up everyday, carry her down my stairs and sit with her on the bench in the street just to get her use to everyday sounds, people, traffic, other dogs just to pick her back up and carry her all the way back into my flat.

I covered the whole room she was in with puppy pads because she didn’t even know or understand what going on a walk was and when she was outside she was just too scared to move… one day she just got up and faced her fear… the day she never ever looked back and grew to the amazing dog she is now.

When she got to the vets she had terrible teeth and was recommended getting some out and while she was going to be under the anaesthetic they wanted to X-ray her back legs due to her having a constant limp. It came out that at some point her leg had been broken and left to heal on its own accord, this meant her leg healed a little wonky and that explained the limp. However she was coping just fine though it was then noted as arthritic and was from then on prescribed loxicom everyday to help.

The vets warned me this would in effect shorten her life span and that they weren’t 100% sure how long she had and they estimated her at 6/7 years old. But with Mara's ever growing confidence and her new found love for life, she fought to live and be able to have the life she always wanted.

Every 6 months Mara has to have a medical review to asses her back legs and make sure she’s doing ok and 4 years later the vets tell me they just cannot believe the fact she’s still here and how she has went against all odds in how long they had in their heads of her lifespan. I genuinely believe this is due to the fact she now has everything she’s probably ever wanted in life.

She’s now a little lazy chonk, whose absolutely idolised and adored by me, my partner and his family. She gets excited to see you, she has moments of zoomies, she’s learnt how to play with other dogs and she takes every single thing in her stride. She truly is a blessing and deserves the world. I’m glad I was able to give it to her 💜
